The Cochin College was founded on July 15, 1967, in response to an increasing demand for higher education in Cochin. "The College symbolizes the hopes and aspirations of the public of Cochin and is a milestone in the crowded history of the Commercial town of Cochin. Slowly but steadily the institution grew into a post-graduate college in 1995 from its humble beginning as a junior college in 1967. The college was accredited with B+ (equivalent to five stars) in January 2004.

The college is sponsored by the Cochin Education Society which was founded as a result of the joint efforts of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and the former Mattancherry Municipal Council. This college is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and offers various courses in both Science and Humanities at the degree level such as Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Commerce, Economics, English Literature and Math�s. At the P.G. level the College offers M.Com, with specialization in Financial Management, M.Sc Physics with Electronics and M.Sc Chemistry
