The Department of ZOOLOGY which was started as a part of the Biology Department in 1968 was later bifurcated as Zoology and Botany Departments in 1982 when the B.Sc Zoology Degree course was started. This is one of the few departments under M.G. University offereing Medical Microbiology as an elective subject. Of the four faculty members, two are Ph.D. holders and two are M.Phil. One research project funded by the Science, Technology and Environment, Govt. of Kerala was completed under the principal investigatorship of Dr. A.K. Prema. The department has produced firt ranks on two occasions and a few second ranks in the M.G. University degree examinations. During 2003-2004, the Department again secured the first rank.
M.Sc. Programme in Microbiology was commenced from the academic year 2005-2006. Microbiology is a frontier field in Life Science with its application in Food, Fishery, Agiculture and Pharmaceutical Industries. Environmental Microbiology is a much sought after discipline in the present day.
The department has a good museum with more than 1000 preserved and stuffed specimens of biological importance. It has a separate department library with 1240 books and 2 journals. The major thrust areas like boidiversity of birds, butterflies, fishes, spiders etc. plant pest interation, studies on microbes and aspects of quality control in food industry have been identified for investigatory projects for B.Sc students as they are found to assume significance in the local developmet. As a part of Zoology association activities the department has been successful in producing a manuscript magazine "Xancus" every year. The Old Students Association of the Zoology Department has instituted an endowment in honour of retired Heads of the Department, Prof. M.Bhagyalakshmi and Prof. Ravindran Unnithan. |
