Kirby and the Forgotten Land is arriving on the Nintendo Switch exclusively. This is unsurprising, considering Kirby has always been a Nintendo-exclusive series, despite the fact that developer HAL Laboratory is technically not owned by Nintendo. Kirby is as closely associated with Nintendo as Mario and Zelda, so fans of his games will already be aware that they will need to purchase a Switch in order to play his latest release.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land Gameplay Trailer

The announcement trailer for Kirby and the Forgotten Land gave us a flavor of what to foresee from the game. We got a sneak peek at everything from the game’s distinctive setting in the ruins of an abandoned city to how it transforms iconic mechanics from the series into a 3D environment. Kirby is no longer stuck running from side to side for the first time in history. Kirby, as usual, has the ability to copy an enemy’s skills and use them to approach a situation in novel ways. Kirby sucks up a Blade Knight and begins slashing at adversaries with a sword in the announcement video. In another video, Kirby consumes Sir Kibble in order to retrieve objects with his boomerang, and he uses the Needle power-up to plow through a group of unknown enemy kind while also smashing through a secret wall. The little puffball even uses ice and fire magic! Kirby hanging above a big crocodile that is trying to eat him, and his all-out struggle with an enraged gorilla are two other highlights from this teaser. Certain camera views in this teaser resemble the restricted perspectives present in Super Mario 3D World, but others appear to allow the player to move freely around the camera.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, a recent rating for the game has shown what we can expect when it is officially released. The ESRB in North America rated the game as follows:

“This is an action-adventure game in which players help Kirby save kidnapped creatures from evil forces. Players traverse 3D platforms while collecting coins, solving puzzles, and using Kirby’s abilities to battle cartoony enemies (e.g., mushrooms, foxes, giant turtles).

“Players use swords, bombs, and blaster-type pistols to defeat enemies; some weapons allow players to use targeting/crosshairs for ranged firing. Boss battles can be frenetic, with laser fire, explosions, and projectiles flying at Kirby, often from a close-up perspective.” We expect the game to share a lot of parallels with Mario Odyssey, another hugely successful Nintendo Switch game series. Since the main game’s purpose is, at least to some extent, to rescue kidnapped Waddle Dees, it makes sense for a second player to join Kirby on his journey as Bandana Waddle Dee.  Although the entire game seems to be playable in co-op, it appears that players will be constrained to remain on the same screen together because this will be a local-only co-op experience.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land DLC

DLC will be difficult to forecast. On the one hand, it doesn’t appear that this game will have any DLC at the moment, but we’ve just seen a short, severely edited portion of it so far. There could be plenty of room to build new zones or habitats, for all we know. In addition, Kirby: Star Allies was known for receiving a slew of free updates and DLC after its initial release, like new Dream Friends and secret regions. As this is a whole new style of Kirby game, the post-launch support, if any, may be rather different. So we’re completely confused on this one, and we’ll just have to wait and see.
